If you haven’t read about the 5 negative Beliefs then feel free to check it out now. If not, just continue reading anyway.

As a Kid, you probably just felt happy whenever you could and you did that as frequently as possible. As an adult, however, it is seemingly more difficult to be happy because of all the responsibilities that we have to face and all the things going on around us which we suddenly have to pay attention to. Therefore, Happiness has become somewhat of an “End-Goal” that people try to reach through mischievous paths.

The strive for Happiness has become a cult and a trend all around the world. Often, people will try to achieve that the State of Joy through pursuing a financially rewarding career or trying getting famous overnight. This MIGHT make them happy temporarily but true, everlasting Happiness can never be achieved by material things or tangible things like money. This is because Happiness is a feeling, and feelings come from within.

So what can make you happy then? We have collected a variety of simple Habits to implement in your daily routine. Of course, there might be several more Habits that make people happy but we are going to focus on 7 Habits for this one. If you have experienced other Happy-Habits, feel free to share them in the Comment Section below!

Habit#1 – Not Showing Off

Pretty simple and straight forward. Just don’t show off. Don’t try to make yourself look so special that others feel belittled. Of course, achievements should always be celebrated and there is no reason to not do that. But what we mean here is simply not showing off and bragging about what good of a person you are and what things you have achieved. We shouldn’t define ourselves by what we do but by WHY we do things.

The reason why this will make you happier is that by keeping things to yourself, you will be able to enjoy them way more. Who cares about your new BMW? Who gives a shit about your flashy lifestyle? The truth is, nobody does. Live under the radar and don’t try to act special – even when you are doing great in your business world. Don’t forget that you are just a human being like everybody else and that you probably cook with water too.

Achieved your goals? Great! Finally lost weight? Exciting! Just got that Promotion you always wanted? Awesome! Celebrate your Success and share with the ones you care about but don’t show off just to impress people who don’t even care about you. You probably heard the saying “We buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t like” – it describes this habit perfectly. People care for a couple of seconds and then they are right back to their own shit.

“The better you feel about yourself, the less you feel the need to show off”

-Robert Hand-

The worst thing about society nowadays is that people are afraid of normalcy. Nobody wants to be normal, everybody wants to be special and that’s why people try to show off exactly WHAT makes them so, so special. If everybody would be special, wouldn’t everybody be normal then?

Habit#2 – Talking Less

This correlates partially with the first Habit of not showing off. Talking Less doesn’t mean you should sit quietly when you are with your friends and not respond to them because you read that “talking less” is a habit of happy people. What it means is that you should simply talk less about things that are not made for everybody’s ears.

Some people are just too small for your vision and they will not be able to share your point of view. They will try to find reasons why things won’t work out in your favor just because they think too small.

There’s no need to tell everybody about your goals, keep them to yourself and work on them relentlessly. Actions speak louder than words. Do what you have to do to reach your goals but don’t talk about them too often. If you do, make sure you do this with people who can help you achieve those goals. It is a waste of time trying to explain your goals to somebody who doesn’t even have goals themselves.

“Nothing strengthens authority as much as silence”

 -Leonardo DaVinci-

In my personal experience, I have witnessed too many times that I was talking about something which has not happened yet. I acted like it was already the way I wanted it to be only to see it fall apart and me being the idiot who talked too much about it. Nowadays I speak less and avoid being all too open about my goals. It helps me stay focused and not being distracted because I exactly know where I am going.

Something magical happens when you start to talk less. Sometimes people wonder why you are not talking because nowadays it is considered normal to talk all the time – otherwise you would be labeled “boring” or “weird”. But the truth is that always talking is actually a sign of insecurity because you can’t deal with silence. Silence is so much more powerful than talking, try it out if you haven’t! See what happens the next time people are talking all over the place and you play the silent game. You’ll be both amazed and surprised about the effect of it.

Habit#3 – Learning Daily

Happy people learn daily because they know they don’t have all the answers and they are not afraid to admit that. Neither are they afraid of openly addressing their weaknesses so they can work on them. But also do they love to work on their strengths. And all that can be achieved by learning daily. The only reason why so many people seem so unhappy nowadays is that they simply stopped learning. Some people truly think that after education (we are talking about ordinary school here) the learning process is over. Far from the Truth, this is where the real learning starts!

School is good because you learn basic things like reading, writing, calculating and if you are lucky enough even foreign languages. But if you think that is all it needs to make it in this jungle then you are wrong. There are a plethora of skills that simply are not taught in school because either it wouldn’t fit the system and purpose of that school or because they don’t want you to learn about them.

Luckily we live in a wonderful time to be alive, you can simply press a couple of buttons and you already have access to the information you are looking for. You can get a lifetime of wisdom by simply investing a lousy 20$ into a book that was written by somebody who dedicated his entire life to that subject. Embrace those opportunities because it has never been that easy to access valuable information!

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty”

-Henry Ford-

Of course, books alone won’t do the jobs because, in the end, we learn by doing. But they are a great step in the right direction because by simply reading books on various subjects of your interest opens a new world in front of your eyes. You start to think differently and the more you read, the more things start to become clear. If you are truly dedicated, you will follow the advice of the books and sooner or later you’ll see your life change for the better.

Habit#4 – Helping Out

There are few things that are so fulfilling and so rewarding like helping out. Simply offering a helping hand to somebody in need or even somebody simply asking for a favor feels so good that you can’t help but be happy. This is because we humans have always lived in communities where we helped each other out. Not only will helping out make you feel happier but also will it make you more likable. Who doesn’t love a friendly person that is just trying to help out?

There are many ways you can offer a helping hand, from volunteering in a project to simply picking up that can from the floor so the cleaning staff doesn’t have to do it, the options of helping out are seemingly endless.

The more you help of course, the more you will get back. Some people will thank you with a smile, others will gladly return the favor. And there will be some who simply won’t show gratitude. But don’t let yourself be bothered by ungratefulness.

“If you want to go fast, go alone – if you want to go far, go together”

-African proverb-

In the Bible, Jesus has healed more than 10 sick people in a day and only one of them has thanked him. If Jesus was confronted with ungratefulness, why should you and I think we are any different? This shouldn’t be an excuse to stop helping out others because in the end, we will always get something back. Maybe not the same day, maybe not even by the same person – but somehow, somewhere the favor will be returned.

Habit#5 – Laughing More

Isn’t it ironic that a Habit of happy people is simply laughing more? Everybody is facing hard times now and then and we all go through difficult times but he who can smile in the worst of days is the one who has figured life out. It lies in our own responsibility how we deal with what life throws at us – so why not respond with laughter?

Laughing has many benefits for our health, not only will it make our faces look brighter and happier, but it also helps to cleanse negative energy. Have you ever seen a laughing person that looks miserable or sad? It is simply not possible to be sad and frustrated and be laughing at the same time.

There might be something childish and immature about simply laughing off your problems and being happy in situations where most people can’t come up with a reason to smile, but then again, who says that life has to be serious and strict all the time?

“If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane”

-Robert Frost-

Nowadays people are so afraid of not being normal that they won’t allow themselves to be foolish and laugh in so-called “inappropriate situations”. Everyone is trying to fit in and play the poker face. But what kind of life is it if you always have to hide your true emotions? The next time you feel like laughing, fuck what everybody thinks and simply laugh it out loud!

Habit#6 – Ignoring Nonsense

This simply means not giving a hoot about what everybody thinks and says about you. Everybody has an opinion but the same applies to butt holes. Where would you be in life if you would constantly listen to what everyone around you thinks or assumes? Probably nowhere! Opinions change like the weather so they are not something settled in stone. One day they might criticize you for doing something and the next they might compliment you – you never know!

Ignoring the Nonsense will make you happier because it will help you to filter all the things that don’t matter and would only hinder your progress. You are the gatekeeper to your mind, so make sure to double-check what you allow getting into that wonderful space!

“Fake people have an image to maintain, real people just don’t care”

-Hikigaya Hachiman

Now, of course, there are moments where you should absolutely listen to your friends, family relative or coaches if their goal is trying to help you. But most of the times you can carelessly dismiss the opinions of others and simply do you.

Habit#7 – No Strings, No Entitlement

This is the ultimate Stage of Happiness, a stage that only the most dedicated and spiritual ones can ever achieve. It takes a huge will to sacrifice in order to be not entitled to anything. In Buddhist mythology it is said that the sole reason for our suffering in this life is because we attach ourselves to things that are not working the way we want them to. By attaching we make ourselves dependent upon something having to happen a certain way. When it doesn’t happen the way we expected it to, the suffering begins.

So the key to ultimate, unconditional and all-empowering happiness is cutting all the strings to this world. Detaching from everything – be it materialistic or not. By having no expectations at all we can never be disappointed, we can only learn. By letting go we free ourselves from being tied.

“Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish has been caught, and the last stream poisoned, will we realize we cannot eat money”

-Cree Indian Prophecy-

Of course, this takes a huge amount of time and wisdom to achieve and we wouldn’t dare to say that we have even mastered this habit in the slightest way. But we still wanted to include it in our list because it has some valuable lessons in it.

Bottom Line

Happiness does not come from outer ward circumstances. We are a feeling species and we work through our emotions. Happiness is an emotion which comes from the inside and therefore it is our own decision if we are happy or not. We can not become happy, we can just be happy. Be it through working on ourselves, helping out others or simply being less boastful. There are many ways to Rome, choose your own path to happiness.

I pretty much use all of the habits you have listed on a daily basis, and am I happy?  Yes, I am!  Probably the hardest one for me that I am continually working on is to ignore the nonsense.  It is true, that it is better to ignore it.  I am much happier when I ignore all the crap going on around me and when I focus on the good in people and the things going on.  Definitely good habits you have listed!

Awesome article, Simon. Most strange thing is that people know these habits, still we don’t practice and look for constant reminder all the time.

For me even if I want to practice them, but I feel myself forcing to do that mist of the time. After reading your post I feel motivated, hope I’ll not forget to practice them anymore.

Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful post. Keep up the good work.

That is because knowledge without execution is just potential power. Don’t expect to master all of them overnight, of course, it takes time to adopt these beliefs. However, it is totally possible and I believe you will crush the bad ones and flush in the good ones!

    Hey Simon,

I found your article very helpful. Everyone nowdays is thinking about money and power but nobody is thinking about how can we be happy. And there’s where I found your article unique. Because all the ways you have expressed are so easy to nurture and adapt in one’s life to become a happy person.

Among the other habits I liked the habit of laughing more. It actually works so much in our real life and I have also found it helpful as laughing reduces the blood pressure and create a brightness in our face. I will surely try out all of the habits you have written.

Thank you for writing this nice article.

Thank you for commenting! It is true and sad that nowadays everything has become so superficial, people judge by income and status not by what kind of human you are. Everything is so fast-paced and if it is not the newest and trendiest it gets disregarded (just think about cars for example). I’m sure that laughing will help you and those around you have a brighter day!
